What Is a Door Reveal? How to Tell If Your Door Was Installed Right

An arched wood double door from inside a foyer in a Cary, NC home
Most people have never heard of a door reveal. It is a simple idea, and once you know it, you can check a door in seconds.

What a door reveal is

A door reveal is the gap around the door panel. It is the space between the panel and the frame that sits around it. On a good install, that gap is even all the way around. While it will not always be perfect, it should be close.

Why an even gap matters

When the gap is even, the door works the way it should. It opens, closes, and seals with no fight. When the gap is uneven, problems start. The door can stick. It can rub. It may not operate the way you want. You might not notice right away, but you will likely see trouble down the road. There are a few reasons a reveal goes off. The door may not have been installed right. Or the house may have settled over time. Both show up the same way, in an uneven reveal.

What an uneven reveal looks like

Look at the door and follow the gap from top to bottom. If it is tight and touching up top and wider at the bottom, the reveal is off. If you can see it rubbing, that is another sign. We had a door like this on a home that has been lived in for years, shown in the video above. The gap was tight in the top corner and wider as it came down. In that case, it was not a bad install. The house has a lot of movement. Here in Cary, our soil has a lot of clay. Homes keep shifting for decades after they are built. That movement shows up in the door.

What a clean reveal looks like

Now picture a door with an even gap from top to bottom. The reveal is clean. There are no big visible issues across the top or down the sides. A door like that is far less likely to give you problems. An arched wood double door from inside a foyer. Captioned with 'What's a reveal around a door? How to use this when you buy a new door

This is the part worth remembering. When a contractor installs a new door, or when you walk a new construction home, look at the reveal. It is one of the fastest checks the average person can make. If you see a wide gap or you see the door rubbing, ask about it. A brand new door should have an even reveal. There are other things to check too, but this one takes seconds and tells you a lot.
